J Dilla’s legacy will be chronicled in a documentary on Hulu and FX!.
The Legacy of J Dilla will debut on April 7 at 10 p.m. ET on FX, and available to stream on Hulu the same day. Presented by The New York Times, the film chronicles his rise to Hip Hop fame, and explores the struggle for control over his legacy.
“I’m a Detroiter and I’m a fighter,” his mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, says in the feature. “I will stay in there and I will fight. I won’t let anybody put my son down, what I do for him down, because I’m here to lift up his music, his legacy.”
Questlove is also executive producing a documentary called Dilla Time, adapted from Dan Charnas’ 2022 biography Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, The Hip Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm.
“Explaining musical genius is my mission. To be able to tell the world about the musician that had the most influence on me is a dream come true,” Questlove said in a statement. “Not just on me, but on an entire generation of musicians that everyone knows and loves. J Dilla was our teacher. And what he taught us was how to feel rhythm in a way we had never felt before. I’m so honored to be a part of bringing his story to the world through this documentary.”
