October is demon time for all horrorcore fans.
It's impossible to talk about creepy hits with terrifying visuals during Halloween season without mentioning Michael Jackson's "Thriller." In 1983, Jackson debuted the 13-minute short horror film in support of the title track of his sixth studio album. Real fans remember the plot. After watching a scary movie with his lady, MJ transforms into an eye-popping zombie who leads an army of dancing zombies to attack his date. The song even features a creepy monologue by horror icon Vincent Price, whose evil laugh closes out the record.
Michael Jackson's "Thriller" along with an insurgence of groundbreaking slasher flicks inspired a generation of artists to tap into their evil side. DJ Jazzy Jeff and Will Smith were the first rap duo to portray their appreciation for the horror genre in their 1988 song "Nightmare On My Street." Later on, artists like the Geto Boys found more ways to embrace the scariest aspects of their lives in their music.
Scarface, Willie D and Bushwick Bill sent chills down fans' spines after they rapped about the paranoia, mental anguish and suicidal thoughts that plague people born into the gangster lifestyle in their breakthrough song "Mind Playing Tricks On Me." Not only did the 1991 song help the Houston rap group blow up, but it also pioneered the horrorcore subgenre in Hip-Hop.
More rappers have unleashed their inner demons on wax since then. Busta Rhymes dropped his 1998 hit "Gimme Some More" just in time for Halloween. The music video follows a young Busta who turns into a devilish monster who terrorizes his mom in their home. He also rocks a mixture of creepy and comical costumes throughout the video.
